The Maya Calendar

No Apocalypse in the Complete Horoscope of December 21, 2012

The Maya Calendar end of December 21, 2012.

(July 29, 2012) We've passed the summer solstice, so now it's getting darker each day until December 21, the winter solstice. This day also marks the end of one long period of the Maya calendar, which has led people to talk about the end of the world. Here, I take a look at the complete horoscope chart for that day.

MY ASTROLOGY BOOK

Your Health in Your Horoscope. Book by Stefan Stenudd.

Your Health in Your Horoscope

This book by Stefan Stenudd explains what your horoscope says about your health, according to the old tradition of medical astrology. The book contains a quick introduction to astrology, as well, and instructions on how to read a birth chart in general. Click the image to see the book (and Kindle ebook) at Amazon (paid link).

The Mayan calendar is impressively complex, including several long periods of hundreds or thousands of years, extracted from planetary movements and formations. One of these long periods, a b'ak'tun, ends on December 21, 2012. According to the Maya calendar, it will simply be followed by another period.

But civilization is obsessed by apocalypses, so there's a flow of modern myth about December 21 being the end of the world as we know it, or at least a catastrophe of unique global proportion. One additional argument used for this gloomy prediction is the claim that at this time, the planets will align in a rare and powerful way.

So, I checked the horoscope for December 21, 2012. You see the chart below.

I made it for noon, but the planets don't move fast enough to change their positions significantly in 12 hours, so this horoscope works fine for the whole day. I chose Greenwich, because it's the center on which our time zones are based. I removed the Ascendant, the MC, and the Houses, since they change in mere minutes.

The complete horoscope chart for December 21, 2012.

There's nothing about the December 21 chart that speaks of doom. For example, there's no conjunction (the joining of two or more planets, combining and enforcing them).

The only opposition (the most powerful of the problematic aspects) is one between Venus and Jupiter, which is repeated at least once a year. There's not a single square (the aspect of conflicts).

If anything, this is a particularly peaceful horoscope, with less threats than normal.

There's sort of a concentration of planets to the three consecutive signs of Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. But four of the planets are outside of it, so it's not exceptional in any way. We had a much stronger concentration of planets in the early 1980s, when all of them were inside just two signs: Scorpio and Sagittarius. That period was much more dramatic than we can expect on December 21, 2012.

I see nothing alarming about the December 21 complete horoscope chart. It's going to be just another day. Of course, things will happen, here and there, but nothing even remotely apocalyptic. The doomsday prophets will have to choose another date.
